Junior Ja'Layia Williams competes at the IHSAA girls' wrestling state finals.

The Kokomo girls’ wrestling team wrapped up their season, sending three girls to state finals on Jan. 16 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Juniors Ja’Layia Williams, Addison Cline and Makyila Rubush represented KHS at the second annual IHSAA girls’ wrestling state finals.

The girls worked hard this year to grow and improve themselves. Their coach, Jacob Bough, can see the work the girls have put in.

The girls really had great matches at sectionals and regionals,” Bough said. “That is what we want as coaches, to be peaking at the right time.”

Cline and Rubush both fell in their opening matches at the state finals, ending their seasons. Williams won her first match, eventually finishing in sixth place.

Even though there were many highlights this season for Bough, a match he’ll remember for a long time came during the regional competition.

“Berklee Stump was probably the one who stood out to me the most. Berklee never complained and never had an attitude about anything all season. She would just show up and wrestle,” Bough said. “In Berklee's opening match at regionals, she was down 11-0 and just kept wrestling. Being down that many points and to come back to pin her girl and move on to the ticket round is a match that I won't forget.”
