Coach Bryan Woods has dedicated years to developing young athletes both physically and mentally. Woods first joined the KHS staff in 2017 as the boys’ track and field coach and became the sprint coach in 2018. Since then, he has been an integral part of the track program, shaping countless students’ athletic and personal growth.
For Woods, seeing students achieve goals they once thought impossible is the most rewarding aspect.
“Sports, when done correctly, help young people build confidence, perseverance and important life skills,” he said.
Over the years, he has witnessed many memorable moments, including winning multiple sectional championships and guiding students to the state finals. Woods emphasizes encouragement and learning from challenges, helping students stay motivated even during tough practices or meets. He strives to make every experience a teachable moment, turning low points into opportunities for growth.
In Woods’s mind, track is not just about physical development; it also improves focus, self-discipline and confidence. Beyond the sport itself, Woods hopes that students take lessons from track that extend into every aspect of life. Perseverance, teamwork, and handling success and failure are all skills that can shape strong, lasting relationships. He encourages students interested in track to focus on personal growth, stay coachable and maintain a positive attitude, rather than comparing themselves to others.
For Woods, being part of the school community is like being part of a big family. He appreciates the ongoing connections with current and former students, whether at school or out in the community. His dedication reminds students that success in sports goes hand in hand with personal growth, perseverance and a strong sense of community. His leadership continues to inspire the next generation of Kokomo High athletes.
