Safety tips

With winter weather upon us, there are more opportunities for danger. Following a few simple tips can help keep you and others safe.

  1. Low lighting is a major cause of falls. Make sure there is enough lighting outdoors, especially near walkways and stairs.

  2. Have the name and contact information of a nearby family member or friend who can regularly check on you. You can also regularly check on them.

  3. Make sure your steps are sturdy and have textured grip to reduce falls if the weather is icy or wet.

  4. If you use walking aids such as a cane, walker or a wheelchair, dry off the wheels or tips before entering your home.

  5. Stay warm by dressing in layers. Remember to eat enough food to keep yourself at a healthy weight.

  6. Keep a small table near the entry door to put items while unlocking the door. This reduces distractions and dangers of slipping or tripping while trying to enter your home.

  7. To save on heating bills, close the doors of rooms you are not using. Close the vents and shut the doors in these rooms and keep the basement door closed. Place a towel at the bottom of all doors to keep the drafts out.

  8. Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition before you travel. Keep extra blankets in your car in case of emergencies.

  9. Check the weather before leaving the house. Be prepared for snowy or icy conditions.

  10. Tell others your route and anticipated arrival time so they can check on you if an emergency occurs.
