Black History Expo 2026 female student singing, student jazz band performing, friends smiling, dad and daughter laughing

Students at Kokomo High School are diligently finalizing their research and creative projects in anticipation of an evening dedicated to culture, education, and community connection. KHS is pleased to invite the community to the 2026 Black History Expo on Thursday, February 19, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

This free, family-friendly event is hosted by the KHS Bring Change to Mind Club, a national organization dedicated to building empathetic and supportive student communities. After the incredible turnout at last year’s inaugural evening event, we are moving into year two with even more momentum and heart.

What to Expect: Art, Music, and Connection

This event serves as a meaningful celebration of heritage, featuring a blend of student research and creative expression. Guests should enter KHS through Door 1 to begin their journey through the interactive displays that showcase specific areas of Black History and Excellence. To complement the student presentations, a live DJ will help facilitate the evening’s atmosphere, and complimentary refreshments will be available for all attendees.

Highlights of the evening include:

  • Original Poetry: Hear powerful voices as students perform their own written works.

  • Live Music: Enjoy the smooth sounds of our student Jazz Ensemble.

  • Visual Arts: Explore student photography and interactive exhibits.

  • Special Guests: A highly anticipated performance from the talented students at Central Middle School.

Coordinating the Celebration

The growth of this event reflects the dedication of our students to share their perspectives and research with the city they call home.

"Last year showed us how much our community values these moments of connection and reflection," says KHS Principal Blessing. "Seeing our students take ownership of this Expo—transforming it from a school project into a community-wide event—reflects the leadership and initiative we encourage here at Kokomo High School."

KHS Teacher Nicole Parry has seen firsthand how the students have leveled up their efforts this year.

"The event has grown from a few displays and performances into a full celebration," Parry noted. "Our student leaders have been incredibly creative and focused. They have delegated tasks based on individual strengths and researched aspects of Black History that may not always be at the forefront of the conversation. When we were planning for this year, the ideas were flowing like crazy."

Community Connection and Support

By moving the Expo outside of school hours for the second year in a row, KHS aims to bridge the gap between the classroom and the community. The Bring Change to Mind Club has utilized this platform to exercise critical thinking and leadership, ensuring that every display is handled with a "personal touch" and viewed through multiple perspectives.
