The Kokomo High School Dance Team returned home from Orlando with more than medals and trophies — they brought back memories, milestones and a legacy of excellence that continues to define their program.
Competing at the national level in the heart of Florida, the team delivered powerful, high-energy performances that showcased months of preparation, unwavering dedication and the kind of teamwork that has become synonymous with Kokomo dance.
Nationals, held annually in Orlando, draw some of the most talented high school dance programs from across the country. For Kokomo, simply qualifying is an achievement — but this year, they made sure to leave their mark.
A Season Built on Determination
From summer practices to late night rehearsals after school, the journey to nationals began long before the team boarded their plane. Coaches and dancers alike describe the season as one defined by grit.
The team focused not only on perfecting choreography but also on strengthening their bond. Long hours in the studio translated into polished technique, synchronized precision, and emotionally charged performances on the national stage.
Head coach Miranda Armstrong said the team’s work ethic has been unmatched this year.
“These dancers never fail to surprise me, and this season was nothing short of a success all thanks to the dancers' determination,” she said. “They deserve more than just awards for their hard work this season.”
Each routine — whether it was pom, jazz, or hip-hop — reflected a collective effort. Every count, formation change and sharp movement was a testament to trust among teammates.
Senior Leadership Leaves a Lasting Legacy
For the senior members of the team, the trip to Orlando carried deeper meaning. It marked the culmination of years of dedication to the program and their final opportunity to compete at nationals in a Kokomo uniform.
Several seniors expressed mixed emotions about stepping onto the national stage one last time.
“I wish I could’ve gone back to my first nationals and tell that version of myself how fast this experience goes by, and how much you don’t want to let it pass you by,” said senior Alayna Kline. “Stepping onto the floor for the last time brought back so many memories and it’s definitely going to be a huge part of my life that I will miss.”
For Kline, stepping onto the stage to perform was a moment she’ll never forget.
“When we first stepped onto the floor to perform our routine I was just so worried about the steps that I wasn’t even thinking about the fact that it was my last time performing,” Kline said. “It wasn’t until after we were done where I realized that it was my last dance on the nationals stage and it felt so rewarding, and unforgettable.”
Senior Anna Becker was a semifinalist at nationals.
“This team has been my second home for the past four years. It still feels surreal that it was my last nationals with my team but I know that me and the other seniors have left a lasting impact on the underclassmen, and we know they are in good hands when we leave.”
Throughout the season, seniors served as mentors to underclassmen — modeling discipline, resilience, and leadership. Their experience brought a calm confidence to the team, especially in high-pressure moments backstage before performances.
Excellence Year After Year
Kokomo’s dance program has built a reputation for consistency and growth. Each year, the team strives not only to compete but to improve — pushing technical boundaries while staying true to the passion that fuels their performances.
The Orlando nationals are more than a competition; they are a measuring stick against the best programs in the country. This year, Kokomo rose to the challenge once again, demonstrating that hard work truly pays off.
Parents and supporters traveled to Florida to cheer the team on, filling sections of the arena with school colors and unwavering encouragement. Back home, the Kokomo community followed along, celebrating every accomplishment.
The teams’ coaches emphasized that success isn’t measured solely by placements.
“Just the overall accomplishment of the team’s engagement and dependability this season made a plaque or award far less important to us than the honor and legacy the dancers brought back to the KHS community,” Armstrong said.
More Than Medals
While awards and rankings are certainly meaningful, team members say the real victory lies in the journey — the bus rides, the hotel room laughter, the pre-performance rituals and the shared tears of joy.
For the seniors, nationals marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Yet their impact will continue to shape the program for years to come.
“We both have been on the team since middle school and have grown not only as dancers but also as people, the constant support from our coaches and community and fellow dancers have shaped us into the performers we are today. We only hope that we will leave a lasting impression to the team of trusting each other, and persevering no matter what,” said Becker and Kline.
As the team looks ahead to next season, one thing is certain: the standard has been set high. With determination, unity, and heart, the Kokomo High School Dance Team continues to prove that no matter the stage — even hundreds of miles away in Orlando — they will rise to the occasion together.
