The KHS winter guard practices their show in the Haworth Gym.

The 2026 winter guard season kicked off at the beginning of February. The show this year is called “Through the Storm.” Their music this year is following a slower tempo than in years past.

The winter guard competed for the first time this season on Feb 14, placing 7th. They followed up with a 1st place finish last weekend. For head coach Deanne Wideman, making progress each week is key.

“Personally, I am looking forward to seeing how our students develop their performance and show throughout our season,” she said. “It is fun to see how each week the guard gets cleaner and more in sync.”

Wideman’s number one goal for her team is always to do their best.

“It is important that we feel good when we exit the floor after competition,” Wideman said. “We have no control over what the judges see or like. We can only control our own performance. We also would love to place in the Top 10 each week.”

For senior Destiney Miller, getting better at performing is a goal for this season.

“Sometimes I have a good performance face, but when I mess up, it definitely shows in my face,” Miller said. “I really want to get better at that because I know the judges look for things like that.”

Even though the show is different from previous years, the guard members are having fun with it.

I love the show this year. I feel like the work goes really well with the music,” Miller said. “I also love the opportunities that the team has to improve and show how well we work together.”

The winter guard will continue to compete and improve to gear up for the Indiana High School Color Guard A State Finals in March.
