Senior Dorian Barbour pins his opponent on senior night.

As the winter season comes to a close, our Wildkat athletes have given the school community plenty to celebrate. From conference success to state appearances, this winter was filled with perseverance, teamwork and unforgettable moments across the basketball court, swimming pool and wrestling mat.

The boys’ basketball team is continuing an exciting season, highlighted by starting conference play undefeated and earning big wins over Marion and Lafayette Jefferson. One of the most memorable moments came in their overtime victory against Lafayette Jeff, where the team’s strong offensive and defensive execution secured the win. The team has already accomplished one of their season goals, winning the North Central Conference title. As they gear up for sectional play, the team has shown that preparation and unity make a difference. A key lesson from the season was that every player plays an important role—when everyone is ready to step up, success follows.

The girls’ basketball team experienced a season centered around growth and togetherness. Bringing together a youthful yet experienced group, the team formed a strong bond that carried them through adversity. Although inconsistency and shooting struggles presented challenges, the girls continued to improve in all aspects of the game. Their overtime battle against Harrison stood out as a defining moment of teamwork and resilience.

“This season was a roller coaster for us but we continued to push through the tough times. I feel like over time our shooting improved a lot and our team chemistry grew to be a lot stronger,” said head coach Haley Peckinpaugh.

Through communication, leadership, and focus on shared goals, the team demonstrated what it means to compete with heart.

In boys’ swimming, the team celebrated a strong third-place finish at the NCC meet. Despite challenges such as snow days, eLearning, pool maintenance and illnesses limiting practice time, the swimmers remained focused and resilient. Their positive energy and consistency helped them push through tough meets, proving that what happens in practice truly translates to race day. The team’s attitude and work ethic were key factors in their success.

“This season our team had an infectiously positive spirit. We put in the work but had a lot of fun doing it,” said head coach Zach Whiteman.

Similarly, girls’ swimming had an impressive season, finishing second at the NCC meet. Like the boys’ team, they overcame limited practice opportunities and various obstacles throughout the season.

“A positive attitude goes a long, long way and consistency is key in success,” Whiteman said, citing the challenges of missed practices due to illness, snow days and pool maintenance.

The addition of several rookies brought fresh energy and optimism to the team, contributing to an infectious positive spirit. Consistency and a strong mindset remained central themes, reinforcing that attitude plays a major role in achievement.

The boys’ wrestling team was able to send two wrestlers to the semi-state meet this season. Senior Dorian Barbour and sophomore Joelle Nieto both qualified for the tournament. While neither was able to punch their tickets to the state finals, for head coach Jacob Bough, just getting there was a success.

Despite battling illnesses and injuries throughout the season, the KHS wrestlers stayed tough and worked hard to improve and compete. Team members who don’t normally wrestle varsity had to step up.

“Winning the TC Duals was awesome because it took guys that normally weren’t in the lineup to step up and get the team victory,” Bough said.

Even though the season is over, the wrestlers are still putting in the time and effort it takes to get better in the off-season.

“The guys have been going still and if we have a good summer, we will be a force to be reckoned with next year!” Bough said.

Finally, girls’ wrestling made history and continued to build momentum. A major highlight came at the IHSAA State Finals when Ja’Layia Williams pinned her opponent.

“The biggest highlight for me this year was in the IHSAA State Finals when Ja’Layia Williams avenged an earlier season loss with a :33 second pin against Franklin Central,” Bough said.

Williams went on to place 6th at the state finals.

Another unforgettable moment was senior Berklee Stump’s comeback victory at regionals after being down 11-0. While watching seniors compete in their final matches is always bittersweet, the program continues to grow, with strong participation at the middle school level pointing toward a bright future. Wrestling requires full commitment, and these athletes demonstrated exactly that.

Overall, this winter season was defined not only by wins and placements, but by dedication, teamwork, and growth. Our athletes represented the school with pride, resilience, and sportsmanship. As we look ahead to spring sports, we celebrate the accomplishments of our winter teams and thank our players, coaches, and supporters for making this season one to remember.
