The gym was loud, the energy was high, and as the final point was celebrated, the scoreboard reflected a definitive win for the Kokomo High School Boys Volleyball team. While the victory was the objective, the final score is just one reflection of the work that began long before the first serve.
Inside the varsity huddle, there is a focus that stats cannot capture. You see the internal reset that happens—that grit to keep a steady head even as the momentum shifts. It is the refusal to let a ball hit the floor without a fight, proving that while these student-athletes play to win, they participate to learn how to stand their ground when the pressure is on.
Beyond the Baseline
Senior Night offered a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the leadership of our upperclassmen, but it also highlighted the resolve required to launch a program into a newly IHSAA-sanctioned era. Under the direction of Varsity Head Coach Kelly Hopkins, our Wildkats are doing that heavy lifting every day. They are showing the guts it takes to attack the ball in the closing minutes, fully aware that mistakes are a natural part of the process, but choosing to go all-in anyway because the team is counting on that effort.
That willingness to try, to miss, and to jump again is where the real growth happens. It is the maturity that comes when a student-athlete realizes the person standing next to them matters just as much as the play in front of them. It is watching a team realize that progress is measured by how they respond to each other when the game gets difficult.

More Than Athletes and Coaches
Before the match, Assistant Coach Aidan Peterson delivered a powerful rendition of the National Anthem—a reminder of the multi-faceted leaders and deep talent that define Kokomo School Corporation, well beyond the sidelines.
The camaraderie of the Wildkat experience was further on display with KHS Varsity Head Wrestling Coach Jacob Bough on the mic as the announcer. Lending his veteran sports knowledge and signature wit to the match, Coach Bough noted over the PA system as the score hit 5-5 that the tally also happened to be Assistant Coach Peterson’s height.
The moment resonated because of the shared respect behind it. Seeing Coach Bough support another Wildkat athletics program, and seeing the KHS Boys Volleyball Assistant Coaches Owen Moore and Aidan Peterson (pictured below L-R) react with a laugh, highlights the real connection within our KHS community.
It is an environment where staff and students show up for one another, navigating the challenges of the seasons while maintaining the perspective to enjoy the game and appreciate the people standing next to them.
A Legacy Built by Community
This era of Wildkat Boys Volleyball is being built by everyone involved—it belongs to the coaches who push for excellence, the parents and families who have embraced this journey, and the fans who come out to cheer on our Kats.
These student-athletes are setting the standard for every player who will wear the red and blue in the years to come. They are establishing a tradition of excellence during a historic moment for the sport in Indiana.
As we celebrate this victory, we also celebrate the support of a community that rallies together to help our Kats build something that will endure long after the final whistle.
