Senior Ethan Kelser is the Lily Scholarship Recipient and is one of the three graduation speakers. Graduation speakers are chosen from the Latin Honor graduates who audition.
Kelser didn’t know if he wanted to be a graduation speaker at first. He used to shake while talking to another person, but as he joined more activities and clubs he started to gain more confidence. He decided to be a graduation speaker because he wants to tell his message to his whole class.
Kelser's speech is about the relationship that we have with strangers and how we in reality are strangers with most people and always will be. This relationship is often looked at negatively; many of us are strangers and will end our time at KHS as such. He wanted to find a topic that could connect with even those that he had never talked to before and in some way try to build a connection with them through his speech.
“I came up with this topic as I was thinking about truly how many people go to our school and the fact that I would be speaking to them all, despite only personally knowing a small portion,” he said.
Following graduation, Kelser will be attending Purdue University to major in environmental and natural resources engineering. Receiving the Lily Scholarship was important to Kelser because he has worked so hard to make sure he could go to college stress free. Kelser wasn’t sure if his parents would be able to help him pay for college, so getting the Lily Scholarship will help him save for his future.
“To be able to say thank you for all you have done, while also saying that I am able to support myself truly means the world to me.”
