As a new school year begins, many students are eager for the start of football season. To showcase this excitement, students have the opportunity to sit in the student section where they can participate in dress up themes to cheer on the Wildkats.
Themes are a creative way for students to express themselves in fun outfits at the games. The majority of the time, themes are chosen by leaders in K-Club and the information is passed along through English classes.
At games, fans are encouraged to show school spirit and pride. Given this many assume that the school colors should be worn, but the student section is far from that based on their energy and crowd involvement. This year, the student section is ambitious to avoid “simple themes” like red out, blue out and spirit. But don’t fret, these themes will be saved for special games like senior night or homecoming.
Specifically for this school year, some themes to look forward to are:
Minions (9/4): Home Game
Wildkat Pride (9/18): Home Game
Blackout (9/25): Away Game
Bikers vs Surfers (10/2): Away Game
Pink Out (10/9): Home Game
Halloween (10/16): Away Game
Although this is a fun experience to have students engaged in athletic activities, there are many rules and regulations that go along with it. Students who are present are expected to cheer and to avoid being quiet at all costs. This is key, especially when the cheerleaders are leading a chant. Along with this, students should utilize appropriate language and avoid foul play. While students from 9th to 12th grade are welcome to participate, upperclassmen are expected to be seated in the front and underclassmen are expected to be seated in the back.
As a freshman or a student who is new to this experience, the student section can be intimidating. As a newcomer, always remember that there was someone who was in the same position as you at some point and there is always someone who is willing to help.
Senior Lucy Goad shared some advice for students who are planning to participate in the student section. She explained a resource that will be available for students to utilize in the future and that there are some students who can provide guidance.
“This year we have around 25 representatives from various sports. I will be relying on them along with Coach Bough to help out with keeping people involved,” Goad said. “I am planning on supplying different items to toss around or play around with in the section to include a little bit of interactivity.”
Goad also explained a resource that will be available for students to utilize in the future.
“We are planning different fundraisers to help supply items for students who can't afford it, kind of like a magic closet but for the student section. In order to get access to these supplies the student will have to email me or coach Bough,” she said. “Soon I will also be contacting students who have graduated to see if they would be willing to donate their old items.”
While there are many things that come along with being in the student section, students should never take it for granted because it can create many memories.
